ABOUT ABOUT

Breakthrough Workshop Theatre presents a "Breakthrough Workshop" of

I Never Saw Another Butterfly

Written by Celeste Raspanti  |  Directed by Ira Bauer-Spector*

Over 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, and only about a hundred were still alive when Terezin was liberated at the end of the war. One of the survivors, Raja, having lived through it all, recalls the story of her time in the camp where she met Irena Synkova.  While in Terezin, Irena dedicated her life to teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little enough reason for hope, creating a little world of laughter, flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire. It's her story and the story of the young lives she changed forever. There were no butterflies at Terezin, of course, but for the children, butterflies became a symbol of defiance, making it possible for them to live on and play happily while waiting to be transported.

Following our remarkable, sold-out "Breakthrough Workshop" of The Diary of Anne Frank in 2014, this piece will once again take our audiences to the world of Nazi Germany, showing how "breakthroughs" can be found in the most unexpected places.
